Giving Up Ignorance
สาวตฺถินิทานํฯ
At Sāvatthī.
อถ โข อญฺญตโร ภิกฺขุ เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข โส ภิกฺขุ ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
Then a bhikkhu went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“กถํ นุ โข, ภนฺเต, ชานโต กถํ ปสฺสโต อวิชฺชา ปหียติ, วิชฺชา อุปฺปชฺชตี”ติ?
“Sir, how does one know and see so as to give up ignorance and give rise to knowledge?”
“จกฺขุํ โข, ภิกฺขุ, อนิจฺจโต ชานโต ปสฺสโต อวิชฺชา ปหียติ, วิชฺชา อุปฺปชฺชติฯ รูเป อนิจฺจโต ชานโต ปสฺสโต อวิชฺชา ปหียติ, วิชฺชา อุปฺปชฺชติฯ จกฺขุวิญฺญาณํ … จกฺขุสมฺผสฺสํ … ยมฺปิทํ จกฺขุสมฺผสฺสปจฺจยา อุปฺปชฺชติ เวทยิตํ สุขํ วา ทุกฺขํ วา อทุกฺขมสุขํ วา ตมฺปิ อนิจฺจโต ชานโต ปสฺสโต อวิชฺชา ปหียติ, วิชฺชา อุปฺปชฺชติฯ
“Bhikkhu, knowing and seeing the eye, sights, eye consciousness, and eye contact as impermanent, ignorance is given up and knowledge arises. And also knowing and seeing the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact as impermanent, ignorance is given up and knowledge arises.

Knowing and seeing the ear … nose … tongue … body …
มนํ อนิจฺจโต ชานโต ปสฺสโต อวิชฺชา ปหียติ, วิชฺชา อุปฺปชฺชติฯ ธมฺเม … มโนวิญฺญาณํ … มโนสมฺผสฺสํ … ยมฺปิทํ มโนสมฺผสฺสปจฺจยา อุปฺปชฺชติ เวทยิตํ สุขํ วา ทุกฺขํ วา อทุกฺขมสุขํ วา ตมฺปิ อนิจฺจโต ชานโต ปสฺสโต อวิชฺชา ปหียติ, วิชฺชา อุปฺปชฺชติฯ
Knowing and seeing the mind, thoughts, mind consciousness, and mind contact as impermanent, ignorance is given up and knowledge arises. And also knowing and seeing the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact as impermanent, ignorance is given up and knowledge arises.
เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขุ, ชานโต เอวํ ปสฺสโต อวิชฺชา ปหียติ, วิชฺชา อุปฺปชฺชตี”ติฯ
That’s how to know and see so as to give up ignorance and give rise to knowledge.”
