At Sāvatthī.
เตน โข ปน สมเยน ภควา ทิวาวิหารคโต โหติ ปฏิสลฺลีโนฯ อถ โข สุพฺรหฺมา จ ปจฺเจกพฺรหฺมา สุทฺธาวาโส จ ปจฺเจกพฺรหฺมา เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมึสุ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ปจฺเจกํ ทฺวารพาหํ นิสฺสาย อฏฺฐํสุฯ
Now at that time the Buddha had gone into retreat for the day’s meditation. Then the independent brahmās Subrahmā and Suddhāvāsa went to the Buddha and stationed themselves one by each door-post.
อถ โข สุพฺรหฺมา ปจฺเจกพฺรหฺมา โกกาลิกํ ภิกฺขุํ อารพฺภ ภควโต สนฺติเก อิมํ คาถํ อภาสิ:
Then Subrahmā recited this verse about the bhikkhu Kokālika in the Buddha’s presence:
“อปฺปเมยฺยํ ปมินนฺโต, โกธ วิทฺวา วิกปฺปเย; อปฺปเมยฺยํ ปมายินํ, นิวุตํ ตํ มญฺเญ ปุถุชฺชนนฺ”ติฯ
“What wise person here would judge the immeasurable by measuring them? I think anyone who’d do such a thing must be an ordinary person, shrouded in darkness.”
